Anton's recent international credits include appearing on London’s West End in Cape Town Opera’s Porgy and Bess, on which he was also the Associate Director, and in the UK tour of The Mandela Trilogy. He has been the Resident Director on a number of highly acclaimed International Touring productions including The Phantom of the Opera, Jersey Boys and most recently, The Sound of Music, Singin’ In The Rain, Annie and Priscilla Queen of the Desert.
Anton obtained his B.Dram (Hons) Cum Laude degree in Drama at the University of Stellenbosch. He was nominated that same year for a Fleur du Cap Award in the category ‘Most Promising Newcomer’ to the theatre industry.
Two lead roles followed in productions of The Rocky Horror Show as Brad Majors and as Kenickie in David Matheson’s production of Grease. Anton was then cast in the International Touring Company of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s CATS, spreading his feline paws across 12 countries as the narrating silver tabby Munkustrap. He also joined the Australian Company of CATS on their Asian tour as Munkustrap.
This was followed by the South African tour of Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in which he played the rock ‘n’ roll crazed Pharaoh. Another tour to Germany and Norway followed in Oscar Hammerstein’s Showboat as Steven Baker.
In the SA Tour of Jesus Christ Superstar for producer Pieter Toerien, Anton performed the role of Pontius Pilate, which earned him a Fleur du Cap Award Nomination in the category ‘Best Performance In A Musical’. The production then toured to Athens and Korea.
Exploring a slightly different avenue, Anton then assisted New York actor/director Anthony Rapp on the South African Production of Jonathan Larson’s Tony and Pulitzer Prize winning musical RENT as resident director. He also performed the role of Gordon and understudy Roger. Continuing his collaboration with producer Hazel Feldman, Anton was appointed resident director and understudy Billy Flynn on the 2008 season of the award winning and highly acclaimed Chicago – The Musical.
He went on to play The Beast in Disney’s smash hit Broadway musical Beauty And The Beast for which he received another Fleur du Cap nomination for Best Performance in a Musical. Further productions included the A Cappella South African musical Noah Of Cape Town, as well as the terrifying hit thriller The Woman In Black for producer Pieter Toerien.
Anton is the co-writer, performer and musical director for the three-time Vita and Fleur du Cap Award nominated shows Offbeat Broadway and Offbeat Broadway 2,3 and 4, which have toured extensively around the country as well as to other destinations in Africa and London. Recent performances include Vince Fontaine in the hit musical Grease, Augustin Magaldi in Evita, Sheldrake in Sunset Boulevard and alternating the role of Daddy Warbucks in Annie.
